The Question of the Two Explorers

Two explorers found themselves stranded on a desert island with only a patch of trees to use for survival. Bitter rivals, they each individually toiled day and night to fashion a raft that would get them off the island to the larger island they could see in the distance.

In a parallel universe, the same two explorers found themselves stranded on the same island. Only in this universe the two were close friends. They worked tirelessly day and night, together, to fashion a raft that would get them safely off the island. Unfortunately, in both worlds, the two only had 42 hours to escape before an active volcano below the sea destroyed the island and them.

Which of the sets of explorers have a greater chance of survival?
