Album Title Conspiracy

Well, I wouldn’t call it a conspiracy per se, but more of an atypical creative collaboration. Interscope Records artists U2 and Nine Inch Nails with their last two albums have released titles that complement one another. In each case, the U2 album comes first. In 2000, U2 released All That You Can’t Leave Behind while Nine Inch Nails came out with And All That Could Have Been. This year, U2 released How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb followed by Nine Inch Nails’ With Teeth.

Before you start discounting this, list how many album titles start with the word ‘And’ as if completing another thought. All That You Can’t Leave Behind And All That Could Have Been makes absolute sense as a complete thought. ‘With Teeth’ is more of an answer to the implied question ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’, but it still can be easily understood as a complete thought when put together. This would all seem coincidental if these two bands were not on the same record label and recorded two consecutive albums in the same year as one another.

Is it an elaborate joke, a rock and roll prank, or some kind of message that these two colossal artists are trying to convey to us?

Only time will tell if a third set of albums continues this trend.
